ON THE COVER

Introspective
acrylic on canvas, from the
New Realm series
by Amy Guidry

From her Lafayette vantage point, artist Amy Guidry creates contemporary, modern, surrealist paintings that challenge antiquated views of women. “The paintings in the New Realm series are for anyone interested in empowering themselves in life,” she explained. “Fairy tales tend to portray women as weak and needy—the maiden, lost in the big, scary forest and in need of rescue. But in my world she learns to adapt, to be in control of her world.”
Guidry, who uses herself as the subject in many works (“… because I’m always available!”), traces her interest in surrealism to a lifelong fascination with psychology. “Surrealists were interested in the method of studying dreams and free association exercises,” she explained. “Whatever came to mind is what they’d paint.”
