Post Mardi Gras Magnolia
Acrylic on Canvas, 64" x 40 "
by Terrance Osborne

Looking at this painting, it won’t come as any surprise to learn that New Orleans is the city that artist Terrance Osborne calls home. But the funny thing is, Osborne painted this piece in Oregon. “I was in Portland with my son for a week,” explained Osborne, “and after about day four I was feeling homesick. So I went to an art supply store and got some canvas. I pinned it to the wall in the hotel room, and painted it there.”
We loved Osborne’s scene for its whimsical portrayal of one of Louisiana’s most recognizable eccentricities—beads dangling from trees. Although Post Mardi Gras Magnolia is on canvas, the artist normally paints on birch panels, which he carves so that his images stand up in bold relief. “It’s kind of the perfect combination of painting and sculpture,” he observed. “I still haven’t found a good definition.” Look for a profile article coming in our April issue.
