Musings of An Artist's Wife blog: "The Artist's Mother"
![]() |
November 2011. “Musings of an Artist’s Wife” started in the fall of 2009. Initially, I hoped to detail George Rodrigue’s history, including his childhood, philosophy, and an in-depth examination of art series such as the Blue Dog, Landscapes and Hurricanes. Most important, the blog shares a detailed analysis of specific paintings, especially his complex Cajun works.
In composing more than two hundred essays, however, this on-line magazine became much more, relating our present lives, even our personal life at times, to George’s past. I recount travel adventures, memories, and art discussions. “Musings” is archival in terms of George’s art and career, but it’s also a public diary (hopefully without resembling reality television!) in terms of our lives.
This post, “The Artist’s Mother,” is a perfect example. It features Rodrigue’s paintings of his mother while describing her somewhat complicated influence on his life and art. The story traces Marie Courrege Rodrigue from 1920s New Iberia to modern day Lafayette, Louisiana, where her strong feelings for her son—a mixture of deep love and acute criticism—continued until her death in 2008 at age 103.
