Shantybellum Blog: "Prince Among Slaves"

Elodie Pritchartt

October 2011. This month’s selection, a perfect fit for our Myths and Legends issue, is from the Shantybellum blog written by frequent contributor Elodie Pritchartt.

When we asked Elodie to share her blogging philosophy with us, she explained that for her it all started at a workshop that spelled out the key elements every blog should have:

It should be:

a. Interesting
b. Informative
c. Entertaining

“Well, all I know is what I know. And I know Natchez,” responds Pritchartt to that directive. “And I’ve also got a crazy, Gothic, Southern family with a town full of characters who shaped my life, defined my childhood and turned me into a storyteller.  There were all kinds of characters here when I was a kid, whom I recall with fondness and humor, some of whom are my own family.  I might be just as likely to tell a story about the crazy cat lady as I am to tell a story about my own crazy family. Heck. I might even tell a story about me (see “Lemon Drop Martini shakeup” or “How I Suffer for my Art”). I might even write a poem, usually awful, but it’s my blog so I’ll rhyme if I want to...or not.  I’ll also write about anything interesting that’s happening in town, any history that I find interesting....well, if I think it’s interesting then I’ll include it. That’s really the only criteria. Let’s just say it’s whatever I happen to be pondering at the moment. And the occasional picture. I like to take pictures.
