“While gathering information for this book I hiked and traveled by car, horseback, bicycle, and buckboard wagon through Louisiana’s cities, towns, and villages. I explored her picturesque bayous, lakes, and rivers by canoe, airboat, motorboat, pontoon boat, and steamboat,” explains Mary Fonseca in the opening paragraph of her book Weekend Getaways in Louisiana.
And if there’s anything else she’s as passionate about as multi-modal traveling, it’s discovering beautiful gardens along the way, which is precisely why Country Roads chose her as curator for this topic.
“My husband knows if there is a garden there we’re going,” she noted with a smile in her voice. And it was one such destination that our readers chose from among her nominations as their favorite bed and breakfast in a garden setting—Greenwood Plantation, deep in the woods outside of St. Francisville, Louisiana.
“It’s a little bit off the beaten path,” Fonseca said, adding that its gardens are not formal as with many plantations. “It’s the oaks and the azaleas, the more natural kind of look. It can be very beautiful.”
Greenwood Plantation offers twelve rooms with front-porch views of those beautiful ancient live oaks and spring-blooming azaleas, in the midst of which is a magnificent plantation home.
