A Visit to Sleepy Hollow

Just outside Boston is the lovely village of Concord. My longtime friend Annette lives nearby and I'll never forget the day many years ago when she took me to Author's Ridge in that community's Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. There Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Louisa May Alcott all lie in rest a few feet from each other. Annette shared stories of how these authors and their families were intertwined in that community, as well as my favorite anecdote about Thoreau. It seems that while Thoreau was immersing himself in the solitude of Walden Pond outside Concord, that didn't stop him from walking back into town every now and then so that his mom could cook dinner for him. And through the magic of my literary history loving friend's stories, these authors were suddenly real people for me rather than just legends. Exactly what travel should be about. And if all this intrigues you, you'll be pleased to note that there is now a roundtrip airfare between New Orleans and Boston starting at $197. Remember with the new regulations all these advertised fares now include all taxes and fees. It's a bit chilly up that way now (although not as chilly as most winters), but these fares are good into early summer. I particularly like May up that way because for us, it's like having spring all over again. I used Expedia's fare calendar option in my search. And if you'd like your shot at literary history, check out our writing contest!
