About this month's road: |

Snow is a rare and ephemeral thing in these parts. So when Julia Morgan’s sister called early one morning a couple of winters ago, shouting down the phone that it was snowing outside, the Baton Rouge photographer grabbed her Nikon D7000 and made for the door. “I spent five hours out shooting that day,” recalls Morgan. “I would shoot until my hands started to hurt. Then I’d go sit in the car until they—and my camera battery—warmed back up.” Between flurries Morgan spotted this classic piece of American iron beside an auto repair shop. And while the truck might not still be in quite the same location, Morgan reports that it didn’t look like it would be departing under its own power any time soon.

Here's a hint:

It has to be said that the road in question was not really all that country, falling well within the capital city limits. In fact the auto shop where Morgan spotted “Red” stands within sight of two well-known Baton Rouge landmarks. One is a place where hundreds of trips start and finish every day. The other is a place where—particularly during the Civil War—thousands of journeys came to an end.

About the artist:

Based in Baton Rouge, photographer Julia Morgan shoots weddings, portraits, babies, pets, and a range of fine art subjects. But she admits being drawn first and foremost to vintage, historical, and other non-contemporary subject matter. “I like the history around here,” she says, “The architecture and the trees and the other old things. And I love to night shoot. I’m all about the Mississippi River bridge—getting a starburst in every light.” More work by Julia Morgan is on display at Salon 1857 in the Circa complex on Government Street, and at juliamorganphotography.com

Congratulations to last month's winner, Patricia Guercio!

Who correctly guessed that CC was on Highway 15 just south of Ferriday. Stay tuned for the next Name That Country Road coming in February.
