Au Revoir Surréalisme: Prints from the Atelier of Georges Visat
At the LSU Museum of Art, an extensive collection of a mid-century movement
to
LSU Museum of Art 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Master printer, painter, and poet Georges Visat found his niche in mid-century Paris, collaborating with the city's Surrealists to revive a movement which had begun to wane between the world wars. His extensive collection is on loan from the Visat family for a new exhibition at the LSU Museum of Art (in collaboration with the LSU School of Art), featuring over fifty works by iconic Surrealist artists, including Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning, René Magritte, Man Ray, Hans Bellmer, Roberto Matta, and Francis Bacon, among others. Also included are illustrated artists’ books with Surrealist poetry, a specialty of Visat, who had a profound understanding of Surrealism’s literary foundations.
The exhibit will be on view from September 28 until March 25, 2018, with a public reception on January 18, 6 pm–8:30 pm, featuring a gallery talk followed by stargazing and sake tasting with the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society and Tsunami on the Pennington Rooftop Terrace. $10; free to members.
