Heritage Lecture: Freedom's Dance
Old Governor's Mansion 502 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Preserve Louisiana gets into the season with an exploration of the history of Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs in New Orleans with the author, Karen Celestan, and photographer, Eric Waters. Freedom’s Dance, forthcoming from LSU Press this April, provides a photographic and textual overview of the social, aid and pleasure club (SAPC) parade culture in New Orleans, tracking its origins in African traditions and subsequent development in Black New Orleans culture. Freedom’s Dance defines this unique public-private culture and captures every aspect of the Second Line, from SAPC members’ rollicking introductions at their annual parade to a funeral procession on its way to the crypt. Sponsored by Wampold Companies, Watermark; refreshments provided by Calandro's Select Cellars and Fine Wines. 6:30 pm–8:30 pm. preserve-louisiana.org/upcoming.
