The Historic New Orleans Collection 533 Royal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130
As one of the venues tapped for the citywide art triennial Prospect New Orleans, The Historic New Orleans collection will host two exhibitions of contemporary photography, featuring the late Tony Gleaton and Monique Verdin. Fashion photographer Gleaton, who passed away in 2015, took special interest in the Native Americans and black cowboys he saw while photographing rodeo riders, ranch hands, and cowboys throughout the Southwest. For several years, Gleaton took up residence in the remote region of Costa Chica, in Mexico, where many of the citizens are descendants of African slaves brought to the country during the Spanish colonial area; photographs Gleaton took there formed his exhibition Africa's Legacy in Mexico, which will be featured at THNOC along with Cowboys: Reconstructing an American Myth. Verdin, of Southeast Louisiana, documents the Houma nation and the changing Mississippi Delta region; her recent documentary My Louisiana Love captures her family and community as they face Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon spill. At THNOC, Verdin's photographs as well as a palmetto tapestry interwoven with her images will be exhibited.
On view until February 25, 2018. thnoc.org or prospectneworleans.org for details.
