West Feliciana Historical Society and the Julius Freyhan Foundation invites the public to recently restored/reopened Temple Sinai to hear Mark Lester, a social studies teacher at West Feliciana High School and an accredited Holocaust Teaching Fellow, relate the extraordinary story of Eva Galler. Eva, eldest of eight children, was born in Oleszyce, a town in eastern Poland where Jews lived among Poles and Ukrainians. When the Nazis attacked Poland in September 1939, three thousand Jewish people lived in Oleszyce. Only twenty survived. Eva was one of them.
Mark Lester is a high school social studies teacher at West Feliciana High School, where he has taught high school history and government for thirteen years. He developed a passion for researching and teaching about the Holocaust while he was in graduate school, during which time he became involved with the Southern Institute for Education and Research at Tulane University. After attending seminars hosted by the Southern Institute he participated in the first Fellowship program and became an honored Teaching Fellow in July, 2011. 2 pm at Temple Sinai, 4740 Prosperity Street.
