From the good-if-slightly-deranged folks at Forge Racing comes another brace of ways to test your mettle. The THUNDERBIRD Moonlight Runs are a pair of trail running events taking place through the woods surrounding the West Feliciana Sports Park:
• December 14: The Thunderbird Moonlight Trail 6K: pits competitors against the resolutely challenging Beast Trail—four miles of twisting wooded singletrack that weaves its way through the woods and in and out of various ravines. Two short sections of doubletrack and lots of fun hills to climb should provide plenty of challenges, as will a couple of shallow creek crossings. Not that you'll be able to see any of them, because it'll be dark. But organizers promise a well-marked course, with orange tape and glow sticks to provide points of reference. So strap on that headlamp and lace the running shoes tightly for a cool Christmas challenge. With food, drinks, prizes and live music at the finish line. Run begins at 6:30 pm. $35
• December 15: The Thunderbird Half Marathon: Same location, only longer. And in daylight. Forge hosts a 13.1-mile half-marathon over the same Beast trail. 8 am start. $55
It's all in pursuit of Forge's time-tested motto: "Run Off The Grid." Register at imathlete.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more.
