Here’s a foolproof formula for a magical holiday evening the kids will cherish: a train (that you can ride!) winding its way past zebras, monkeys, and hippos headed to bed; hot cocoa to keep hands warm; and 3D glasses—the better to see the holiday light displays scattered along the train route at the Hattiesburg Zoo. Tucked into fourteen acres of Hattiesburg’s Kamper Park in the heart of Hattiesburg, the Hattiesburg Zoo is one of only two zoos in the state and home to more than eighty species of animals. During normal zoo hours, a train ride is not included in the price of admission. But during Zoo Lights, unlimited train and carousel rides are included in the admission price of $10 for adults and $8 for children ages two to twelve (children one year and younger get in free)—as are 3D glasses, cocoa, reindeer food, carolers, and the company of Santa and Mrs. Claus. One of the most exciting additions to the event is the 3D light experience. Visitors will be treated to magical light displays including animal scenes such as cavorting polar bears or families of waddling ducks. 6 pm–8 pm during three weekends in December: 6 & 7, 13 & 14, and 20 & 21. 107 South 17th Avenue.
