LOOK Studios & Gallery

Published July 2010. Artistically speaking, one would think Juliet Lockwood has done it all. Over the past twenty years Lockwood has accumulated many different titles. She has been called everything from a milliner to a fine and decorative artist, from a self-employed designer to a paint contractor, and from a workshop developer to a high school art teacher. Yet, Lockwood has never really referred to herself using more than two of those titles at a time, until now.

Originally from Brookline, Massachusetts, Lockwood is the daughter of printmaker George and published poet Margo Lockwood. After her father’s death when she was five years old, Margo raised her four children and always supported their interest in studying art. After receiving her Bachelors of Fine Art at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt), Juliet took a studied a year abroad at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, Ireland. Later she moved to San Francisco where she began working as a milliner and a fine and decorative artist. She has been a Baton Rouge resident for the past 15 years and has worked as an artist for private lessons and as an art teacher at St. Joseph’s Academy for two years.

Lockwood is passionate about art and loves to share this energy with others. She accomplished her goal of combining her many talents and turning it into a business on June 1, by opening LOOK Studios & Gallery in Baton Rouge’s Garden District.

The name of her studio and gallery relates to the way she feels about life and art. “LOOK,” she says, “it is all about really opening your eyes and witnessing what is going on around you.”

Juliet is bringing back her old businesses, even her experience as a teacher. LOOK Studios & Gallery offers everything from art workshops and decorating advice to artist exhibitions, travel retreats and art parties and even hand made hats and duvets. Along the walls of LOOK one can view drawings and paintings by her late father. She also has her own work as well as the work of her children’s and siblings display in the studio, many of which are for sale.

Looking for something fun for the children to do this summer? Juliet offers morning group children’s lessons for those five to eight years old, nine to 13 years old, and 14 to 17 years old. The two-hour session is $35 and includes a snack.

From 1 to 4 pm Juliet offers private and semi-private classes. These classes consist of drawing, watercolor, figure drawing, still life, portraiture acrylic painting, and hand building, a 3D exploration in Design. Some classes include field trips to local parks, museums, architectural sites, cemeteries, and markets. She is also offering classes from 5 to 8 pm to groups. All classes are made by appointment with flexibility.

Juliet describes these classes as art therapy. “Society needs to slow down and relax, and I want to open their eyes,” she says.

Juliet has big plans for her art exhibits. She is planning to have four this year, which will feature: photography, portrait, student shows, and an outsider’s art exhibit.

Combining art with travel, Juliet is bringing in her love for both by hosting travel retreats, based on exchange rates and location, to hotspots such as San Fransisco, Boston, Chianti, Italy, Turkish Coast, West of Ireland, The Netherlands, and Senegal.

“I hope to build in the interest of art, by educating and bringing people together under art and philosophy,” Juliet says of the retreats.

Juliet is also available for on location parties, where she can bring the class to you and your friends and also include spa and massage treatments.
