To Saturday 12 January 2013
Hits : 2447

Just how did Andrew Jackson and his hastily assembled army defeat the British at Chalmette Battlefield in 1815? Step on to the battlefield itself this weekend and see for yourself, when reenactors bring the setting surrounding the historic battle to life. Living history experts in period dress as 1815 British and American troops and civilians present military drills, cannon and musket firing, and period craft demonstrations.

9 am–3:30 pm both days. On Friday American and British troops face off at historic De La Ronde Oaks in a 7 pm reenactment of the December 23, 1814, night battle. Saturday offers a kids camp with special activities from 11 am–3 pm, and lantern tours every ten minutes from 5:45 pm–7:15 pm.  Free, except for the lantern tour, which is $6. Parking is at the St. Bernard Parish Visitor Information Center, 409 Aycock Street, Arabi, Chalmette, where restrooms, refreshments, and tourism information are available. Free shuttles will run continuously from the parking area to battlefield. Visitors may bring picnic lunches; no food available at the park. (504) 281-0510.
