Kidreading
Like most businesses and public institutions, all branches of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library remain closed to public access until further notice. But don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of the library’s myriad online resources. The Digital Library’s enormous collection of resources is freely available to any patron with a current East Baton Rouge Parish Library card. Offerings include:
- Thousands of digital publications like newspapers, e-books, e-magazines, and e-audiobooks.
- Streaming media including music, films, documentaries, and concerts. Kanopy is a streaming film service specializing in clever, thought-provoking movies. IndieFlix is a service focused on shorts, features, documentaries, and series. Qello specializes in on-demand concert films and music documentaries.
- Digital learning tools and platforms providing access to a huge range of new skills or areas of knowledge. Learn a new language with Mango or Pronunciator. Poke around in Brain HQ to give your brain a series of mental challenges. Dive into CreativeBug to learn a new craft, or open up AtoZ World Foods to expand your palate with thousands of recipes from all around the world.
- For the kids, resources include Miss Humblebee’s Academy, Pebble Go, Sesame Street E-books, Early World of Learning, and many more. Find a curated list of suggested children’s websites at ebrpl.com/Kids/index.html. Digital museum tours, parenting information, and homework help are here, too.
- Then there’s good, old-fashioned reading. This year’s One Book One Community selection is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and while many of the public events surrounding the selection have had to be cancelled, there are plenty of ways to get to grips with this formidable book. If you haven’t got a copy, Americanah is available as an e-book with Libby through the OverDrive platform, and in audio format through RBdigital. Library staff have also curated lists of books with similar themes. Access it all at ReadOneBook.org.
All this, available free with your library card. Visit ebrpl.com/digital.html to get started.
