Casting Louisiana Beauty in Silver, Bronze, and Gold
From pelican wings to cathedral spires, Mimosa Handcrafted encodes the soul of Louisiana in timeless jewelry—each piece a tribute to the state’s nature, artistry, and people.
In Louisiana, beauty comes in many guises. It’s there in nature—in the sensual curve of a brown pelican’s wing and reflected in the opalescent scales of a redfish glinting in coastal waters. You can discern it in the designs of the state’s soaring architecture, the latticework of a hand-woven hoop net, and the flags representing its many peoples. There’s beauty in Louisiana’s intangibles, too—the fragrance that rises as a Cajun trinity sautés in a stock pot, or the enveloping generosity of people gathered to share a home-cooked meal. Working in gold, silver, and bronze, Baton Rouge-based Mimosa Handcrafted lends form to that beauty, capturing the state’s essence in heirloom-worthy jewelry as timeless as the culture that inspires it.
Although owner Madeline Ellis didn’t set out to make Louisiana-inspired pieces when she began designing jewelry in 1998, she found herself drawn in that direction. “It’s hard not to be inspired by what’s around us,” Elllis says. “We have all these hidden treasures surrounding us that aren’t so hidden. I wanted to capture them in a way people haven’t seen them before— to pique their interests so they can start to appreciate and honor them.”
Intentionality shapes every Mimosa Handcrafted piece, from the initial sketch to the polished product. Using the centuries-old lost-wax casting process, each accessory is made locally in Louisiana, and every purchase supports local nonprofit organizations.
From the windows and stonework of Louisiana’s Old State Capitol building to nature’s own designs, each Mimosa motif casts a chapter of the state’s story in wearable form. Other designs look inward, reflecting the essence of our shared humanity and our capacity for love, faith, and connection. Mimosa Handcrafted’s line of friendship bracelets and necklaces pay homage to the bonds people share and the experiences that draw them together. The Nativity collection honors Christ’s love for His people in lasting reminders of His blessings, cast in silver, bronze, and gold.
These treasures carry meaning year-round, but this month, they’ll shine all the brighter in the Mimosa Shoppe’s holiday display. This Christmas season, stop by to explore Ellis’s intricate collections in person, and don’t miss her whimsical tribute to the classic tale A Cajun Night before Christmas: a ceramic and cast-bronze tableau of Santa’s sleigh drawn by airborne alligators.
Whether you’re searching for a meaningful gift for a Louisiana expat, or a new heirloom to call your own, every Mimosa Handcrafted piece embodies the spirit of Louisiana and its enduring beauty.
