St. Joseph Hospice, a key part of the Carpenter Health Network since 2002, provides specialized end-of-life care to patients across Louisiana and Mississippi. Contrary to the common misconception that hospice is a "place," St. Joseph Hospice defines it as a philosophy of care focused on providing peace, comfort, and dignity to people facing life-limiting illnesses. St. Joseph Hospice brings together board-certified physicians, nurses, social workers, non-denominational chaplains, and bereavement professionals to address not only physical distress, but also the emotional, spiritual, and practical needs of patient and family. The team works together to manage symptoms and ensure a higher quality of life, whether care is delivered in a patient’s home, a nursing facility, or at The Carpenter House inpatient facilities in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, Shreveport, and Gulfport, Mississippi.
How St. Joseph Hospice Works
St. Joseph Hospice bridges critical gaps in the healthcare system, providing services to help patients "reclaim their spirit of life," focusing on the joy of reminiscence and reunion, rather than just the imminence of loss.
Accessibility: Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance. St. Joseph Hospice also provides medications, medical equipment, and supplies related to the diagnosis at no cost to the patient, removing financial barriers during a family's most vulnerable time.
Education and Outreach: They work to dispel the myth that hospice is only for cancer patients or that it means "giving up." By advocating for early intervention, they help patients manage chronic conditions like heart disease and dementia more effectively.
Family Support: Their commitment extends beyond the patient to include bereavement and grief support for families, helping loved ones to heal after a loss.
