The driving force behind each show, exhibit, and program at the Manship Theatre is community. Over the last two decades, the Manship has established itself as a world-class performing arts venue while staying true to its mission of enriching lives through the power of the arts. Whether patrons are seated in the audience or waiting in the wings, the theatre strives to bring the performing arts within reach, making the dream of stepping onto the stage accessible for all.
Inspiration In and Out of the Classroom
In keeping with its mission to expand access to the arts, the Manship Theatre partners with local schools, homeschool programs, and educational organizations to introduce young audiences to the performing arts—both at the theatre and in the classroom. The theatre’s field trip program brings students to the Shaw Center to experience live performances for themselves. In addition, educational outreach programming developed in partnership with area arts organizations brings live performance directly to school communities, with local artists visiting Capital Region classrooms to teach music, theatre, visual art, and dance.
“The Manship is a true cultural treasure in the community,” said Jeannie Luckett, Director of Programs and Partnerships at the West Baton Rouge Museum. Through its partnership with the West Baton Rouge Museum’s Blues After School program, the Manship Theatre is inspiring a new generation of talent and industry professionals, by offering students chances to observe professional musicians’ sound checks, then attend the concerts that follow. Students have had the opportunity to see Grammy-nominated and award-winning artists such as Tab Benoit, BeauSoleil, Dumpstaphunk, and Anders Osborne. “With the Manship’s support, we’re able to expose students to culturally rich experiences and industry best practices,” said Luckett.
Summer Theatre Camps
When the weather heats up, an even more immersive theatre experience awaits. The Manship offers multiple summer camp sessions that culminate in a live performance on the theatre stage. Camps like these provide opportunities for students to develop their creative talents while experiencing the ins and outs of putting on a show first-hand.
