Michelle Schulte, Chief Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the LSU Museum of Art, shows some artifacts from the museum's collection.
For her feature in this year's “Visual Arts” issue, writer Elizabeth C. Weinstein takes readers behind the scenes at some of Louisiana's most prestigious art institutions—the LSU Museum of Art, NOMA, and the Hilliard Art Museum—and into the carefully monitored storage rooms where artifacts of their permanent collections live when they are not displayed in the galleries. Inside are treasures: paintings by some of the world's most influential artists, fragile and ancient curiosities from lands far away, examples of craftsmanship from arts practically lost. As the Hilliard's Executive Director Molly Rowe put it, “People are surprised to learn they have access [to such treasures] right here in our community."
