"Puppet" by Jimmy Block
They say the world's a stage, and multi-disciplinary artist Jimmy Block interprets the world as a shadow box. "Production" begins with characters he creates, stories he imagines—often inspired by his home, New Orleans, a place where, as writer Brett Barnes puts it in his feature story "Up Close and Personal," theatricality finds a home not only behind the curtain but "walk[ing] down the street, gather[ing] in courtyards, join[ing] a parade, enter[ing] a barroom, and continu[ing] long after the formal performance has ended."
Using prints, photos, and materials from various sources, Block captures the whimsy and delight that motivates our regional dance artists, comedians, playwrights, actors, and storytellers. He captures the magic and the sense of play that the theatre brings to life, and that life brings to the theatre.
