In addition to artisanal coffee beverages, Highland Coffees in Baton Rouge offers single origin beans, roasted in-house.
Since 1989, Highland Coffees has been a fixture in the historic North Gates neighborhood of LSU. But what even the most loyal patron might miss is that owner Clarke Cadzow sells an extraordinarily wide selection of single-origin coffees, too. Those sacks of green coffee beans aren’t decoration: among the aromatic coffee varieties on offer are Sumatran Mandheling, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Guatemalan Huehuetenango, and Kenyan Peaberry. Highland Coffees ships across the country daily.
“We bring in the finest coffees from the three main regions of the world for specialty coffee, which are East Africa, Central and South America, and Indonesia,” Cadzow explained. Green coffee beans arrive at the Port of San Francisco and are shipped to Baton Rouge. Here, the green beans are roasted in-house in a variety of medium and dark roasts. For optimum freshness, roasted beans are packaged in eight-ounce bags and labeled with the roast date. “Every bean we’ve ever sold or turned into a cup of coffee, we’ve roasted,” Cadzow says. He notes that in addition to searching out the best-tasting green coffees, he sources beans from operations in which coffee farmers are fairly treated, and land is cherished.

Highland Coffees also offers flavored whole-bean coffee, a hard-to-find specialty item. To prepare it, Mexican Altura coffee beans are lightly coated in flavoring blends such as Caramel Royale or Cinnamon Swirl, then bagged for use in drip coffee, French press or pour-over preparations. Want to buy beans for your morning brew, but aren’t sure which setting they should be ground at? Whether you use a Keurig, auto-drip or French press, just tell the baristas behind the counter how you make your coffee and they’ll ensure that the beans you’ve purchased are ground to the right setting.
