Anne Noggle: Herself
to
New Orleans Museum of Art 1 Collins C. Diboll Circle, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124
Anne Noggle's first life was lived thousands of feet above ground—from earning her pilot's license as a teenager in 1922 to flying missions as a Women's Air Force Service Pilot in WWII to performing stunts in air shows to flying missions during the Korean War.
After being diagnosed with emphysema shortly afterwards, she began a second life as a photographer, with an emphasis on placing women in the foreground. She worked as a teacher, and curator across the American West, and in all of these capacities set to exploring the aging process of women, which she called "the saga of the fallen flesh".
In her most famous body of work, she presents what today might be considered "selfies" of herself throughout the 1970s and 80s—documenting developments such as a facelift, sutures still visible. Part of this series culminated in one of history's most famous selfies: taken while flying her own plane, which would have required Noggle to release all control of the aircraft to hold the camera.
This exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art features work from across her career. On exhibit through February 2023. noma.org.
