Atchafalaya Month

October—all too brief as it is—offers a rare collection of days in this subtropical climate where the weather cools (most days), the bald cypress shifts its shades, sunsets and rises are more attainable with their shorter days, and mosquitos abandon site. There's a reason that our October festival calendar of events is busting at the seams year after year. 

It's also why the month has officially been designated Atchafalaya Month—a season perfect for visiting the nation's largest river swamp and its surrounding flora and fauna. In honor of the designation, the Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site will offer a display showcasing the significance of the Basin, its history, its resources, and more.
