Build a Boat at the West Baton Rouge Museum
West Baton Rouge Museum 845 North Jefferson Avenue, Port Allen, Louisiana 70767
Ron Blue has built boats on the East Coast. He's built boats on the Gulf Coast. He's restored tall ships, and has built hundreds of small boats, and even started his own boat building school in Rockport, Texas. Now, Mr. Blue wants to help you, yes you!, build a boat.
Learn everything you need to create your own heirloom quality watercraft for the summer at this special workshop with the West Baton Rouge Museum. Constructed by Marine Plywood, White Oak, Spanish Cedar, Cypress, and White Pine, your 4x8 foot vessel will be power-able by electric trolling motor, small gas outboard motor, or oars, and will be eligible for a title from Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. And you'll have done it all on your own, as an individual or as a team.
The process will take five full days over two weekends, July 16–18 and July 24–25, which will conclude with a special ceremony to christen each boat. 9 am–5 pm each day. The maximum cost per boat, including tuition and materials, is $1,400 per boat, though the cost can be lowered by donations or by students providing some or all of their own materials.
