Cat Island Spring Migration Bird Walk
Birds of a feather flock to Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge for this annual guided bird walk, timed to coincide with the height of spring migration
Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge Creek Road, Saint Francisville, Louisiana 70775
The Friends of Cat Island invite nature lovers to join a rare spring birding walk to visit the depths of the Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge. Typically by late March, Cat Island's bottomland hardwood forest is flooded with Mississippi River water, making the refuge impassable except by boat. This year, though, river levels have remained low enough to permit walking access, and participants are invited to join local birding experts for a three-miles jaunt through the refuge in search of visiting migrants. While exact locations and routes will depend on refuge conditions on the day, volunteers will be on hand to guide participants to the sign-in locations. Wear suitable clothing and footwear for hiking through the refuge's rugged terrain, and be prepared for heat and no bathroom facilities. Bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen. Attendance is free, but please register by contacting William Daniel at (225) 721-0090/epewhd@icloud.com, or Jesse Means at (225) 936-6529/jesselmeans3@gmail.com.
