West Baton Rouge Museum 845 North Jefferson Avenue, Port Allen, Louisiana 70767
The vibrant and diverse cultures of Creole peoples from around the world will be on display at the West Baton Rouge Museum through May in their new exhibition, Créoles du Monde. Louisiana residents may be familiar with "Creole" as a term of descendants of the original French and Spanish families who settled this area, but the designation and all it encompasses has a whole life that extends far beyond the boundaries of South Louisiana.
The Créoles du Monde exhibit showcases various Creole societies and histories spanning the Americas, Africa, and Europe, brought to life in paintings, historical documents, local textile art, and many other forms. Though scholars may not agree on a single exact definition of "Creole," it's easy to recognize the fascination and importance of the range of dynamic cultures shaped by African, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Indigenous influences. On display during the museum's regular operating hours at 845 N. Jefferson Avenue, Port Allen. (225) 336-2422 or westbatonrougemuseum.com.
