Preserve Louisiana Heritage Lecture: Two Civil Wars
Shortly before the Civil War, Baton Rouge schoolgirl Celeste Repp suffered a misfortune: her diary found its way into the hands of a young man.
Old Governor's Mansion 502 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Shortly before the Civil War, Baton Rouge schoolgirl Celeste Repp suffered a misfortune: her diary found its way into the hands of a young man. Fortunately, he was less interested in what she had to say than in recording his own experiences aboard the Union gunboat Essex. Author Katherine Bentley Jeffrey's Two Civil Wars, The Curious Shared Journal of a Baton Rouge Schoolgirl and a Union Sailor on the USS Essex presents both journals, along with annotation, context, and biographies. She will discuss this work and the two very different views up the war it records over refreshments at the Old Governor's Mansion beginning at 6 pm. Preserve-Louisiana.org.
