Throughout Haiti's storied history, the Caribbean country has had ties to New Orleans: from its time as the French colony of Saint-Domingue, through the Haitian Revolution that began in 1791 and marked the largest successful slave revolt in the history of the Western Hemisphere, until its vibrant present. In this online Gallier Gathering, Loyola University Sociology Professor and Author of American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race (Oxford, 2017) Angel Parham will explore this connection through time, and how Haiti is still reflected in New Orleans culture today: through food, religion, language, and more. Space is limited, so join the Zoom meeting early to ensure your spot. 6–7 pm. hgghh.org.
