Herblock: The Black and the White
Old State Capitol 100 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70801
Political cartoons are so tied to a certain time and anxiety that it's downright fascinating to look back later at the buffoons and shysters who dominated an era. The Louisiana Old State Capitol's current exhibit, Lines with Power and Purpose: Editorial Cartoons, deciphers over fifty cartoons from the Golden Age of print journalism. For added insight, come to the historic House of Representatives today for a free screening of Herblock: The Black and the White, a look into cartoonist Herb Block who drew every scandal from Watergate to Lewinski. With his swift, unsparing pen, Block landed himself on Nixon's enemies list, won three Pulitzer Prizes (and shared a fourth for Public Service during Watergate), and even coined the term "McCarthyism." Commentary from the likes of Tom Brokaw, John Stewart, and Ted Koppel, sheds further light on Block's talents—but strap in for a promised mind-blowing twist. Even if we knew, we wouldn't tell you. 10 am. louisianaoldstatecapitol.org.
