January at the Joy Theater
The Joy Theater 1200 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70112
This iconic, historic venue on Canal Street, founded by Joy Houck—read all about the infamous theatre mogul in this article from our November 2018 issue—was once of only four original movie theaters in New Orleans. Designed by Favrot & Reed architects, the Joy opened its doors in 1947 as a "modern" movie house, and it stood for over half a century as the city's premier movie theatre. After shutting its doors in 2003, suffering damage from Hurricane Katrina, and re-opening in 2011, the Joy now joins the spectacular venues of New Orleans in the 21st century, hosting local and national performers, as well as staying true to its roots with special film features.
