Spend the summer learning new and innovative strategies in the garden with a little help from the green thumbs at All You Need (formerly Southbound Gardens). The grassroots education and community center focuses on providing tools and knowledge regrading sustainable living and holistic health. June offerings include:
- June 7, Intro to Beekeeping: Learn how to get started in a fruitful, ecologically beneficial, lifelong hobby. Located at Grow On, 2358 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm. $20.
- June 13, Raising Backyard Chickens: Learn all the steps to start your own little backyard egg farm. Coops and runs, raising chicks, egg production, buying adult birds, egg eaters, broody hens, feed, and more. Located at Grow On, 2358 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm. $20.
- June 14, Water Management Basics: Learn simple ways to prevent flooding in your yard, including French drains, rain gardens, and barrels, as well as how to integrate rainwater into your garden irrigation and ecological improvement. Located at Grow On, 2358 Urquhart Street. $20.
- June 20, Grow Mushrooms on Coffee Grounds, Paper, and More!: Learn the basics of fungal ecology from guest teacher, professional mushroom grower Leif Olson. Olson will demonstrate easy mushroom growing techniques like inoculating buckets with pasteurized straw, coffee grounds, and paper. Located at Grow On, 2358 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm. $20.
- June 21, Composting Basics + Make a Worm Bin: Interested in composting, but not sure where to start? Here we'll cover all common mistakes, different methods, how to use compost, and then—if you want, you can buy materials to build your own simple composter for worm composting. Located at Grow On, 2358 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm. $20 for lecture, additional $20 for materials to build a composter.
- June 22, Grow Mushrooms on Logs: This workshop will cover the all out basics of fungal biology, mushroom cultivation—focusing on oyster and shiitake mushrooms—and making mushroom logs. Located at Laughing Buddha Nursery, 4516, Clearview Pkwy. 10:30 am–noon. $35.
- June 27, Creating Edible Ecosystems: Feed yourself and nurture plants, animals, and soil too. Located at Grow On Urban Farm, 235 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm $20.
- June 28, Backyard Farming: Learn the ins and outs of tiny, right out the back door farming—from irrigation, what to plant, where to get your plants, bed prep and placement, and more. Located at Grow ON, 2358 Urquhart Street. 6:30 pm–8 pm. $20.
- June 29, Intro to Permaculture: Permaculture is a way of designing living environments that is founded in the ethics of caring for people and the planet, and using our natural systems. Learn how permaculture relates to your life, and what kind of strategies you might incorporate into your design plans. Located at Laughing Buddha Nursery, 4516 Clearview Pkway. 10:30–noon. $20.
