Kinky Friedman at the Manship
Up close with the creative force behind "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed"
Manship Theatre 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
After fronting a college surf band, Kinky Friedman formed Kinky Friedman & the Texas Jewboys in 1971. In 1974 he released his self-titled album, featuring such colorful tunes as "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and "Ride 'em Jewboy". The record made the waves one might expect across the music industry, which led to the Texas Jewboys touring with none other than Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Now decades into his storied career, Kinky has a lot of other feats under his belt: he's written several best sellers, a set of detective novels, and other books here and there; he's run for office numerous times in his home state of Texas; and he has his own brands of cigars, tequila, and salsa. This year, Kinky tours in support of his new studio album, The Loneliest Man I Ever Met, and these days, most of his proceeds go to his no-kill animal shelter, Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, which he funds and operates in Texas. He lands at the Manship Theatre on July 1 at 7:30 pm, with The Three Amigos opening. $39.95‒$59.95 at manshiptheatre.org. 100 Lafayette Street.
