March Films at the Manship

Leave the X-Men to the megaplex. Each month, the Manship Theatre offers a slate of films and special events, from beloved classics to nationally touring plays and performances. Here's what's in store for March:
March 1: Cane River (1982) Special Film Release: Presented by Films at the Manship, River Road African American Museum, and West Baton Rouge Museum, this Natchitoches Parish-based love story was crafted by an entirely African American cast and crew almost forty years ago. The film is available for the first time in a brand-new, state-of-the-art 4K restoration. There will also be a pre-show reception and post-show Q&A with the film's actors Richard Romain and Tommye Myrick. 2 pm. $9.50.
March 8: Cat Video Fest 2020: Hold your Youtubing, the makers of Cat Video Fest have done all the work for you in this compilation reel of the year's best cat videos, selected from thousands of submissions, sourced animations, music videos, and the usual sources too (Youtube, TickTock, Twitter, etc.). Funds from the screening will go towards the efforts at Baton Rouge's Cat Haven nonprofit rescue group. 2 pm. $9.50.
March 10: The Hottest August (2019): In this complex portrait of New York City, collected over the course of a single month, the collective moment—influenced by political tensions, financial anxieties, and environmental despair—is presented as a question of the future. What now? 7 pm. $9.50.
March 11: European Film Month Presents Corpus Christi "Boze Cialo": Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2020 Academy Awards, this film follows the character Daniel as he undergoes a spiritual transformation and journey to the vocation of preaching. 7:30 pm. $9.50.
March 12: European Film Month Presents Pain and Glory "Dolor Y Gloria": Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2020 Academy Awards, this film examines art through the perspective of life lived, all through the lens of the character Salvador Mallo, a film director in physical decline. 7:30 pm. $9.50.
March 20: Cailloux the Movie (2019): This short documentary tells the story of Andre Cailloux, who was born enslaved and died a hero in the Union Army. At his funeral service in New Orleans, a French abolitionist priest, Father Claude Maistre presided, and it was the largest of its kind, with the streets filled for over a mile by those paying their respects. There will be a Q&A session held afterwards with the film's director. 7:30 pm. $9.50.
March 27: European Film Month Presents Portrait of a Lady on Fire "Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu": The winner of the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay, and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematographer, this film takes place in Brittany, France in 1760. Marianne, a painter must paint a portrait of Héloïse, a reluctant bride-to-be who has just left the convent. Marianne must paint her without her knowledge, and begins to observe her movements by day, painting by night. The two women draw close to form an intimate bond as the day grows closer and closer. 7:30 pm. $9.50.
