The 400-acre Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville has plenty to offer during this first month of released COVID-19 restrictions across Louisiana, especially for those looking to stretch their legs, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy the mental relief of experiencing the beauties of nature.
May 26
• Bicycling the Back Trails and Tips to Trail Riding with The Bike Path owner, David Moeller: Moeller will share his life-time passion and expertise with tips to riding the trails for the biking enthusiast, and guide you through the back trails of the Northlake Nature Center’s 8-plus miles of pure natural delight. Explore the back trails and discover why trail riding is becoming an exciting alternative to bike riding the pavement! Helmet required, bike light and mountain bike or wide tires recommended. Reservations required. 6 pm. $5 for non-members; free for members.

• Bamboo Nursery Field Trip: Sign up now to learn all about bamboo from Owner Alain Flexer. Tour the nursery’s breath-taking bamboo forest, learn what you can do with bamboo— and yes, you can eat it as well. To finish the day, make a bamboo birdhouse for your feathered friends, big or small. Reservations required. 10 am. $5 for non-members; free for members.

• Butterfly and Wildflower Walk with Linda Auld: Come join the BugLady of New Orleans, who has been working in her three-generation family business, Barber Laboratories, where you can also visit the “Learning Room” where she raises live butterflies and moths. Auld has also been known as the Caterpillar Mama for over forty years now, and has raised 126 species of butterflies and moths, photographing and studying their life cycles. Her BugLady’s Butterfly Summer book will be on sale at the walk, so you can learn the different plants that the butterflies like and what you can do establish a garden for them. Take a nature walk through the trails of the Nature Center, where many wildflower seeds have been planted during Arbor Day Festivities. Reservations required. 10 am. $5 for non-members; free for members.

• Dog Wag and Walk with Sam. Sam is back after ACL surgery and rehab! Take a guided walk through the trails with your 4-legged companion experiencing the joy of traversing the trail network for plenty of tail wagging, sniffing and socialization! Water and bowl recommended, leash and friendly 4-legged required. Reservations required. 8 am. $5 for non-members; free for members.
