The four-hundred-acre Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville has plenty to offer during the month of May, especially for those looking to stretch their legs, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy experiencing the beauty of nature.
June 1, June 8, and June 22: “Nature Walk and Titivation” Smell the clean air and hear the birds rejoice as you visit swamps, ponds, bayous, hardwood forests and pineland habitats. Reserve a lopper to spruce up the trails with your trail trimming techniques even more. Cherish the beauty, give your healthy lifestyle a jump-start and titivate yourself and your community while supporting the Northlake Nature Center. Join the nature-loving folks at Northlake for a two-hour walk in the woods and light exercise in the healthy outdoors. Loppers are limited. 5:30 pm. Free.
June 3, June 11, and June 17: Storywalk. Explore the trails at Northlake Nature Center while reading interactive stories Stellaluna, Waiting for Wings, and The Pigeon Needs a Bath! Bring a snack or lunch, stroller and wheelchair accessible. 10 am. Free, no reservations required.
June 13: “Line Dancing” with Jeanne Schramm. Get you dancing shoes on and get ready to learn some new steps or rekindle the old in Northlake's Pavillion. Space is limited; reservations required. 6 pm. $5; free for members.
June 14: "Kundalini Yoga" with Sally Dunn: Kundalini Yoga is an active form of meditation using postures, breath and mantras. It is a yoga that practices meditation and movement to achieve a sense of spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing. The theme this month is “Gardening the Mind”. Bring your own yoga mat and dress for the outdoor weather under the Pavilion at the Northlake Nature Center. Space is limited; reservations required. 1 pm. $5; free for members.
June 25: "Walk in the Woods—Medicinal Plants with Kelly McGee and Plant I.D. with Rue McNeill": On a guided hike through the Northlake Nature Center, discover the wonder of Louisiana's native plants. McNeill will point out key leaves, flowers, and developing fruit while Kelly discusses medicinals. Reservations required. 9 am. $5; free for members.
June 26: "Dog Wag and Walk" with Sam—Take a guided walk through the trails with your four-legged companion experiencing the joy of traversing the trail network for plenty of tail wagging, sniffing and socialization. Water and bowl recommended, leash and friendly four-legged friend required. 8 am. Free for members, $5 for non-members. Limited space available, registration required.
June 28: “Bicycling the Back Trails” and “Tips to Trail Riding” with The Bike Path owner, David Moeller. David will share his life-long passion and expertise with tips for riding the trails for the biking enthusiast and guide you through the back trails of the Northlake Nature Center’s over eight miles of pure natural landscape delights. Explore the back trails and discover why trail riding is becoming an exciting alternative to bike riding the pavement. Helmet required, mountain bike or wide tires and bike light recommended. Space is limited. Reservations required. 6 pm. $5; free for members.

July 8: “All About Nature” book club with moderator Bev Chase will meet at the picnic tables to discuss Under a White Sky The Nature of the Future by Elizabeth Kolbert.. Kolbert takes a hard look at the new world we are creating. Along the way, she meets biologist who are trying to preserve the world’s rarest fish, engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone and Australian researchers who are trying to develop a “super coral” and physicists who are contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere—all to save the earth. Noon–4 pm. $5 for non-members.
