New Symphony of Time: Panel Discussion
Mississippi Museum of Art 380 South Lamar Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39201
Mississippi Museum of Art Director Betsy Bradley will moderate a discussion with Brooklyn-based artist Rico Gatson and writer and Jackson State University professor Dr. RaShell Smith-Spears about creativity and movement across time as it relates to the opening of New Symphony of Time. Using his own work Four Stations as the basis for his dialogue, Gatson will discuss his time spent in Mississippi and the surreal beauty of place that is so fraught with history, all of which shaped his work about the spaces associated with the murder of Emmett Till. Smith-Spears, who has authored an essay for this exhibition about the Margaret Walker poem "This is My Century, Black Synthesis of Time," will discuss the ways that writers and artists have used memory, place, and equality to connect humanity across time. This panel discussion coincides with the grand reopening of the Museum's permanent collection and will invite visitors to consider Mississippi's creative legacies through broadened narratives. 2:30 pm. msmuseumofart.org.
