Manship Theatre 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Don't lose the romance of actually going out to the theatre. Leave your Wi-Fi behind and head to downtown Baton Rouge. Each month, the Manship Theatre offers a slate of films, from new-release indies to modern classics and documentaries. Here's what's in store for October:
October 5 & 12: The Rocky Horror Picture Show with Shadowcast. The audience-participation free-for-all reaches new eights as the troupe Terrible Thrills leads the way with a "shadowcast" of the cult classic. 10 pm. $11.
October 7: Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.: Drawn from a never-before-seen cache of personal footage spanning decades, this new-release documentary is an intimate portrait of the Sri Lankan artist and musician M.I.A. who continues to shatter conventions. 2 pm. $9.50.
October 12: Family Dinner Improv Comedy Show: Baton Rouge's premier comedy troupe keeps the Hartley/Vey Theatre crowd in stitches, with help from drink specials on offer. 7:30 pm. 6 pm.
October 16: Forgotten Bayou: Louisiana's tales of resiliency are often focused on how its people respond to large-scale disasters, mostly hurtling in from the coast. But the documentary Forgotten Bayou tells of one little community on Bayou Corne and how it handled a 35-acre sinkhole spreading across homeowners' backyards. Directed by LSU graduate Victoria Greene; produced by Baton Rouge natives John Darling Haynes and Paul E. LeDoux; score by Mike Esneault. 7 pm. A filmmaker Q&A follows. $9.50.
October 25: Halloween: A new chapter of John Carpenter's 1978 classic opens this month. Brush up with a viewing of the haunting original that set Michael Myers loose upon the world. Eek. 7:30 pm. $6.50.
