Orpheus in the Underworld
Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts 1419 Basin Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70116
Everyman Orpheus is on a quest for his dearest that spans heaven and hell, in this comic opera (opéra bouffe) by Jacques Offenbach. Orpheus in the Underworld premiered in 1858, with a revival in 1874, and is notable for its creation of the "infernal galop" (which became the can-can at the Moulin Rouge) while also, in its political gags, managing to insult just about everyone in the Second French Empire. In this New Orleans Opera Association production, tenor Casey Candebat takes the role of Orpheus, that poor schlub. Led by Maestro Lyall with fresh creative energy from Director Alison Moritz and Scenic Designer Steven Kemp. 8 pm Friday; 2:30 pm Sunday. $26–$225. neworleansopera.org.
