Pieces of History: Ten Years of Decorative Arts Fieldwork
to
The Historic New Orleans Collection 533 Royal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130
The Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) project aims to preserve intimate moments of history through the preservation of decorative arts objects––including furniture, home furnishings, and tools––which can provide profound insight into the stories of those who once created and utilized them. In the exhibition Pieces of History, these beautiful and important pieces of pre-Civil War history are displayed at the Historic New Orleans Collection. The exhibition also assesses the dichotomy of the luxury experienced by those who lived in the homes where these objects were present, with the much harsher realities of the enslaved individuals whose work provided the economy for such wealth. The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the exhibition, Nell H. and Fredric J. Figge and Mrs. Frank W. Masson.
Virtual talks are offered in conjunction with the exhibition, titled "Luxury and Violence in the Plantation South," which will be held July 10 at noon, 14 at 1 pm, 20 at noon, and 24 at 1 pm.
