Newcomb Art Museum - Tulane University Newcomb Circle, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118
A new exhibit at the Newcomb Art Museum , Quiet Reserve: Stitching an Ambitious New Woman, traces how Newcomb’s embroidery program fostered a generation of industrious, self-sufficient artists prepared to participate in the region’s changing cultural and economic landscape. Through original examples of students’ art needlework, the exhibition highlights a curriculum that redefined and reinforced ideas of womanhood and labor in the early twentieth century. Meanwhile, The Moss Mystique: Southern Women and Newcomb Pottery continues through the fall semester. This show examines the material practices, imagery, and regional affiliations of Newcomb Pottery, exploring how its artists visualized—and helped define—ideas of place in the American South. The museum is in the Woldenberg Art Center, 50 Newcomb Pl, New Orleans. newcombartmuseum.tulane.edu.
