to
Louisiana Baton Rouge, Louisiana
As part of the Solomon Northup Committee for Commemorative Works' year-long traveling exhibit “Solomon Northup: Hope Out of Darkness," the monument will stop at two Louisiana locations before its final installation in Marksville, Avoyelles Parish. “Hope Out of Darkness,” a bronze work standing twelve feet tall and weighing 1,200 pounds, was crafted by figurative sculptor Wesley Wofford, FNSS of Wofford Sculpture Studio in North Carolina. The statute, a likeness of Northup, begins its journey at the Whitney Plantation from February 22–March 17, before traveling to the Alexandria Museum of Art, from March 17–April 22. Northup is known as the author of the famous 1853 slave-narrative "Twelve Years Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853." snccw.com.
