Tennessee Williams at Southern Rep
Loyola University 6363 Saint Charles Avenue, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Syrupy accents and tragic pasts color the plays of Tennessee WIlliams, who's earned his own festival in New Orleans every spring. Along with this year's event, the Southern Rep is staging a double-header of Williams' rarer works with And Tell Sad Stories of the Death of Queens and The Two-Character Play. In the former, Candy, a successful drag queen, picks up a rough sailor and spoils him with money and attention. When he leaves her suddenly, it’s up to the two queens who live upstairs to offer consolation. The latter, called by Williams his "most beautiful" since A Streetcar Named Desire, a brother-and-sister team of touring actors are abandoned in an isolated theatre by their troupe to face an unknown audience. Nine performances between March 21—25 and March 29—April 1. 7:30 pm; 3 pm Sunday. $8–$40. southernrep.com.
