The Green Book: A Guide to Freedom
Manship Theatre 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
The Green Book: A Guide to Freedom, a new Smithsonian Channel documentary—not the similarly named, recent major motion picture—tells the story of Harlem postal carrier Victor Green and his published guide to traveling the country as a black man in the 1930s. The Negro Motorist Green Book proved useful well into the 1960s, noting safe havens and notorious "sundown towns." The documentary highlights and witnesses stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph. The film is presented tonight at the Manship by the River Road African American Museum and the West Baton Rouge Museum. 7 pm; doors at 6:30 pm. Free—so come early to secure your seat. manshiptheatre.org.
