The Kohlmaier Cabinetmakers of New Orleans
During the 20th century the father-and-son cabinetmaking team of Ruppert Kohlmaier, Sr. and Kohlmaier Jr. crafted some of the finest furniture ever made in Louisiana, reviving the tradition of excellent bespoke furniture, operating out of a modest shop at 1018 Harmony Street. That tradition continues today…
On Thursday, November 4 at the Louisiana State Museum's Cabildo, the exhibit A Century on Harmony Street: The Kohlmaier Cabinetmakers of New Orleans opens with a reception to honor Ruppert Kohlmaier, Jr. and the legacy of deceased Ruppert Kohlmaier, Sr. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue were researched, curated & written by Cybèle Gontar.
A Century on Harmony Street: The Kohlmaier Cabinetmakers of New Orleans exhibition tells the story of the Kohlmaier firm remaining at 1018 Harmony Street, focusing on its history, methods, fine furniture and commissions and their personal story. Ruppert Kohlmaier, Jr., born in 1936, continues to work at 1018 Harmony Street, where he has spent his entire career. Ruppert’s vivid recollections about his training, of working alongside his father, their noteworthy commissions, and working methods have enriched both the exhibit, and a 320 page catalogue by Cybèle Gontar, author of Chasing the Butterfly Man: The Search for a Lost New Orleans Cabinetmaker, 1810-1835 and a contributing author to Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture, 1735-1835.
Opening reception attendees will have first view of the exhibition and enjoy cocktails courtesy of the Goldring Family Foundation and the Sazerac Company and heavy hors d’oeuvres by Patti Constantin, Designs in Catering and Entertainment by the Gentilly Street Stompers. Tickets begin at $125 for Louisiana Museum Foundation and $1,000 level Friends of the Cabildo members; general admission tickets are $150. Sponsorships are also available.
