Women's History Month Lecture Series
Southeastern Louisiana University 1514 Martens Drive, Hammond, Louisiana 70402
In honor of Women's History Month, Southeastern Louisiana's Department of History and Political Science is hosting a free spring lecture series featuring a diverse set of presentations on women and history topics. See the schedule below for upcoming dates:
March 13: Professor of Political Science Margaret Gonzalez-Perez will discuss female genital mutilation, and its path to official unconstitutionality here in the United States, which was finalized just this past November. What is female genital mutilation? Why has it become a political issue in the United States? Was the United States Congress within its rights to impose a ban on the practice? How has this become part of the states' rights debate? Why should we care? These questions and more will be addressed by Dr. Gonzalez-Perez at 1 pm in the Pottle Auditorium.
March 19: Heather Duncan, history and political science graduate student, will deliver the series' second lecture, "Patrons of Prophecy: Oracular Practitioners in Ancient Greece". The discussion will focuses on the petitioners of the oracles at Delphi, Branchidae-Didyma, Claros, Dodona, Olympia, and Zeus Ammon. 11 am at the Student Union Theatre.
March 27: Rounding out the series, Lauren Doughty, instructor of history and political science, will discuss "Royal Women: Sexual Politics and the Gendering of Royal Authority." Her presentation will highlight the women of the West Saxon royal court, who, though they were often marginalized or ignored, played a valuable role in securing and expanding royal authority. 1 pm at Pottle Auditorium.
