In South Louisiana photographer Andy Crawford’s new book, Into the Lost World: A Journey into Louisiana’s Bayou Country, the reader joins Crawford on a quiet immersion into the depths of Louisiana’s wetlands. In each shot, each moment, Crawford captures the inherent mystery of places like Lakes Verret, Dauterive, and Maurepas—as well as the magnificent Atchafalaya Basin. From his kayak, Crawford is able to reach places a world apart from modern society, witnessing sunrises usually only seen by spoonbills, and the gentle ripples left behind a great blue heron’s slow stroll. Evidence of humans exists here, too, though, and Crawford meditates on this in photos of moonlit fishing camps and river chapels, ditches left from the logging era, and the invasive apple snail’s egg sacks clinging to cypress trees.

“The swamp can be chaotic,” he says, “with moss draping the tangled branches of flooded cypresses. It’s always beautiful, but it’s easy to get lost in all that disorder. I’ve learned to look for small vignettes, a visual photographic frame, as I paddle through the swamps. When I ‘see’ that winning view, there’s a little spike of adrenaline as I move into place and begin setting up for the photo. Sometimes I have a composition in my head for months—even years—before I find the right scene. It’s especially gratifying when one of these scenes materializes in a stretch of swamp I’ve paddled numerous times. Maybe the light hits the view just right, or I approach from a new angle.
Finding that perfect composition that encapsulates the beauty of the swamp is when my mind settles, when all the chaos of the day dissipates and my mind clears. I relax and soak in the beauty around me, even as I work to ensure my camera settings and composition are just right.”

"Paddling these waterlogged landscapes reveals amazing textures, from the tendrils of Spanish moss to the rough bark of cypress knees. The water creates incredible reflections of the trees and moss. Sunrises and sunsets strike a match to fiery displays of colors in the sky above. And fog cloaks the flooded forests with mystery. Added to that is a profusion of wildlife, from Louisiana’s iconic alligators to great blue herons to pink roseate spoonbills . . .

. . . The isolation of the swamp heightens these qualities. It’s a place where you see the rhythms of nature in their most raw and beautiful form."

"My goal is to pull back the veil of secrecy that cloaks the swamps, so I've always been interested in finding places relatively few people get to see. That means running my motorboat miles down bayous and canals, or paddling my kayak into flooded swamps not visible from the boat launch . . . The goal of my work is to create images that make the viewer feel as though he or she has been transported from the civility of their daily life into the isolated beauty of the world’s most beautiful swamps."
