My favorite of all grasses, switchgrass is a gem of fall—when all of our native grasses are blooming so brilliantly alongside our asters and goldenrods. I have seen it growing naturally in various settlings, including dry sunny prairies and along riversides where the earth stays moist. Its purple bloom and autumnal color are outstanding, and especially jaw-dropping in large masses—whether in the natural world or within the residential landscape. I am deeply touched by the sounds of switchgrass; when the fall winds kick in, it makes a beautiful, rustling song.
