Nestled along the banks of Bayou Teche in the part of South Louisiana known as “the Cajun Coast,” the small city of Franklin offers much more than meets the eye. From its vibrant history and lavish architectural beauty, to its joyful, community-centric events and activities of an energetic local merchants association, this community is making a name for itself as a destination off the beaten path, where time slows down and simple pleasures reign.
Walking and Driving Tours
Wander through the city’s historic district, which boasts more than four hundred structures including majestic antebellum homes and picturesque Victorian cottages. The city’s late nineteenth century downtown shopping district exerts unmistakable charm upon its many visitors. During a walking (or jogging) tour led by acclaimed local guiding service Tours by Steven, visitors can get to grips with Franklin’s significant historical record during a Bayou Town Stroll, or embrace the eerie and extraordinary during the Ghost Walk itinerary. A self-guided walking and driving tour also leads the way to thirty-four Franklin area homes you won’t want to miss.
For history you can wander through, make time to visit the Grevemberg House Museum. Built in 1851 and furnished with decor and ephemera dating from that time period, the Greek Revival-style townhouse features reproduction wallpapers from the Civil War era, Civil War artifacts (guns, ammunition and whatnot), and even Victorian period toys, arranged in an upstairs bedroom. Shadowlawn, another historic home constructed circa 1850, also merits a stop. Donated to the St. Mary Landmarks Society complete with its original furnishings, Shadowlawn shares its location with Franklin’s oldest building—a tavern built in 1807 in the Greek Revival style.
Outdoor Shopping, Dining, and Festive Fun
Beyond its painstaking preservation of the past, Franklin knows how to capture something special and not-quite-like-anywhere-else in its contemporary celebrations, too. This April 5, Dinner Under the Lampposts promises a five-star dining experience held en plein air, under the soft light cast by the Victorian lampposts that line Franklin’s Main Street. Nosh on sumptuous fare prepared by chefs from nearby Cypress Bayou Casino while living out your Hallmark movie fantasy amid the nostalgic glow of a simpler time. Come back in May for the Bayou to Main Marketplace and Bayou Teche Black Bear Festival, an exuberant vendor fair that packs the city’s most popular thoroughfare with arts and crafts, homemade goods, jams and jellies, music, and the rich culture of the region. In June, come to the Soul Food Festival to make the most of Father’s Day and Juneteenth weekend.
