Afterward, feeling rejuvenated and refreshed, you could walk next door to the Viking Cooking School, which offers hands-on cooking classes led by experienced chefs using state-of-the-art Viking Range cooking equipment. The school offers day or evening classes on Fridays and Saturdays, with menu selections that explore a variety of international cuisines and cooking styles, too. Six classes are offered each weekend; night classes tend to be more “dressed-up and polished,” often focusing on classical French-style cuisine or steak dinner menus. Daytime classes tend towards the more rustic and family-style, teaching menus and dishes suited to a family brunch or backyard barbecue.
“It’s just a fun night."
—Paul Brown
Paul Brown, author of Southern Blend: Old Favorites & New Traditions, is one of the instructors at the school. He explained that the bulk of people who take Viking Cooking School classes come from out of town and visit to enjoy an evening where you can actually eat what you cook, have a glass or two of wine and relax. “It’s just a fun night,” he said.
If cooking your own dinner isn’t quite your thing, make a reservation at Giardina’s Restaurant, which is owned and operated by the Viking Range Corporation. With 14 private booths and a large dining room that opens to a handsome courtyard, at white-clothed tables set with fine crystal and premium cutlery, Giardina’s welcomes diners with a sophisticated menu featuring steaks, seafood and Italian cuisine, an extensive wine list and an atmosphere of old-world elegance. After dinner, visitors can stroll through downtown Greenwood where locally owned shops and boutiques sit within easy walking distance.
Be sure to time your Alluvian escape to coincide with some of Greenwood’s signature events and festivals. Some of the most popular are Que on the Yazoo (live music and slow-smoked barbecue deliciousness, May 1–2), the patriotic Stars & Stripes Festival (dazzling fireworks musical headliners, and a riverfront boat parade held annually around Independence Day), Bikes, Blues & Bayous (“Mississippi's Largest Bike Ride,” which returns on August 1), or the 300 Oaks Road Race (an easy-going 10K run through the tree-lined streets of Greenwood, which usually takes place during September).
